Who is Benevolent Songs?

Benevolent Songs (SESAC) is a music publishing company that I started in 2009. At the present time I am mostly publishing songs that I have written, produced and recorded.

After a 20 year hiatus from songwriting, recording and performing music during which time I was a Christian communicator and pastor, I am fortunate and blessed to have the opportunity to revisit the creative side of things and be involved again in creative expression through music.

Quite frankly and simply put I rediscovered something that I had always known to be true. A three minute song (or in my case a five minute song...old longwinded pastor habits are hard to break ) is quite often more engaging and powerful than a 45 minute sermon in which the listener is basically reduced to a passive spectator. At least you can play air drums while listening to a song right? Try doing that next time the pastor, the cleric, the imam, or the motivational speaker preaches!

If you are a creative person or have ever written a song in your life you probably know what I mean when I describe the creative process as a mysterious thing. How do you turn an abstract idea that exists only as a vague embryonic melody or lyric in the mind and transform it into sound waves that penetrate the ear, heart and soul of the listener? Where do the creative ideas originate in the first place? Why do some have an aptitude or even a desire to do so while others do not? Certainly no one in their right mind could take the credit for the creative process. Comically more than a few creative types live under that illusion .

As an artist I have to often remind myself that I have been entrusted with the creative gift that I tried to clumsily describe above and I am to be a good steward of that gift. This along with the love and passion for music is the true identity of Benevolent Songs. If you are among those who can be blessed by this little sliver of creation then we will both be the richer for it.
